Task 1.3 – Numerical study of perforated plates with grazing and bias flow

Vortex shedding at sharp edges is known to damp acoustic waves, and this effect is commonly exploited in silencers, where the orifices of perforated plates (or cylinders) convert acoustic energy into vortical energy. Task 1.3 will use numerical tools to study the acoustic behaviour of a single orifice, and subsequently an array of orifices, with (grazing and bias) flow. Simulations with various parameters that cannot be easily changed in an experiment, will provide quantitative information about the acoustic damping behaviour. There will be a two-way interaction of this task with the vortex-shedding aspects of tasks 1.1 and 3.2 of the TANGO Network project.
