Keele is an attractive campus university with a turnover in excess of £114m, a total staff of about 1600 and some 9800 students (including postgraduates). The science disciplines represented at Keele include mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry and biology. Keele’s research activities are organised in 7 research institutes, which are subdivided into groups. The Group of Applied Mathematics within the Research Institute for the Environment, Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics (EPSAM) will participate in the proposed project. It comprises 5 professors, 1 senior lecturer and 1 lecturer, as well as 3 post-doctoral fellows and 4 PhD students. It was highly rated (grade 5) in the Research Assessment exercise of 2001. The Group of Applied Mathematics provides a first-class supervisory and training environment, in line with the strict expectations of the UK’s research councils.
